From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).

Heartfelt awesome movie. This is a really great movie and I’d watch it again and again. Fantastic writing and acting. Thank you for making this one, it’s a refreshing change from most of the Hollywood garbage coming out recently.

Yes, there is a lot of heartbreak in the film. But it’s not about heartbreak. It’s also not just about surviving your circumstances. It’s about living and not allowing yourself to accept what you assume is your fate. There’s a lot of truth here about ethics and integrity and entitlement and compassion. And it’s very funny. A lot of humor can come from overcoming adversity or tragedy or fear and empowering inspiration is often derived from little personal victories. Those are things we can all understand and to which we can all relate. The period detail is so authentic that you just kind of forget it was recently filmed. The acting is terrific, especially from the three leads. Giamatti’s role must have been written specifically for him because it’s impossible to imagine anyone else playing the part. The set design is rich and full of character and the writing is honest and witty and frequently emotional without becoming exploitive or maudlin. I can’t imagine changing a thing. Highly recommended.

For those that say this is too depressing, you are weak and pathetic.

This is one of the best films I saw this year. 2023 is when Hollywood started releasing REAL FILMS again and I’m very glad they did. HIGHLY recommended!

This is one of the few movies i’ve bought, and it was so worth it. It’s genuinely so moving and well done! A movie that will affect anyone with a heart, and an instant classic for the snowy holidays :)

And I agree, it is kind of depressing.

A great classic movie that feels like how good well rounded movies were made back in the day. Acting was great and the story line was interesting enough for you to want to find out what happens till the very end.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS FILM. KUDOS TO ALL THE ACTING AND THE ONE OVER THE REST IS STILL MY BEST AND THAT BEING PAUL G. HE STEALS THIS MOVIE BECAUSE HIS HEART IS IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES. HE NEVER FAILS AT MAKING ANY MOVIE LESS THAN HUMAN. HE IS THE KIND OF GUY THAT ALWAYS HAS YOUR BACK NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE. THIS IS A DIFFERENT HOLIDAY MOVIE THAT DEALS WITH REALLY WHAT THE HOLIDAY IS ABOUT. THE THREE REMAINING CHARACTERS ARE LEFT TO THEIR OWN THIS XMAS. THEY FIND IT HARD AND REAL BUT STILL ARE ABLE TO LIGHT THE SPIRIT UP THIS XMAS IN THE SIMPLEST OF WAYS YET NOT ALWAYS THE EASIEST.WITH A LITTLE SUPPORT FROM ONE ANOTHER AND TRYING NEW THINGS BY LETTING GO.THEY FIND THAT NO MATTER THE SITUATION OR THE DIFFERENCES IN AGE AND MORE THEY CAN COME TOGETHER AND SEE THE SIMUILARITIES. NOT ALL XMAS HAVE TO BE A CERTAIN WAY THAT MOST MOVIES MAKE THIS HOLIDAY ABOUT. I LOVED THIS ONE!!!!!!!!

Giamatti for best actor period. Full stop. This is a role meant for Paul. What a fantastic and heartwarming experience. On my top spot for 2023 films. A must see.

This film is so well crafted. It’s funny, it’s touching, it’s smart. Feels like a Hal Ashby film in look, feel and tone. I highly recommend. This is coming from a filmmaker who is extremely critical of most new movies.

Forget Barbie and Oppenheimer. This film has heart and humor. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Warm but sharply observed comedy; a cri de coeur about believing in integrity and real love; a restorative tale about what being a good man really is; an implicit criticism of what war does to us all; a love letter to the aesthetics of 1970s film, and to all the qualities of snow in New England; and just a great all around movie. I'm so glad I waited to see it until December - it is made to see in this month. The closer to Christmas, the better.

Saw it in the theaters and just bought it to watch again. Touching, funny, beautifully shot, brilliantly acted movie. Great period piece with well written story and dialogue. It will be placed in my top dramas. Highly recommended.

A must watch movie and a new addition to the annual christmas movie list.

Sentimentally honest. Beautifully acted. Paul’s best work to date. I highly recommend this, and that’s a rare thing.

Sometimes a simple human story is all I ask for when watching movies. This film of 3 broken people who bobd and heal over the Christmas break is very bittersweet but also hilarious. The screenplay was great. The lighting and filtering gave it a classic '70s feel. And the acting was great. Paul Giamatti, as always, gives hit his all and knocks it out of the park. Ties Oppenheimer for my favorite movie of the year.

One of the best films of the year and maybe the best of Payne’s career. It’s as equally hilarious as it is heartfelt. Highly recommended.

Alexander Payne made a Christmas classic. Not an easy task. If you like your Christmas movie with a little a salt this one is for you. Sideways is his best film. This one is number two in my opinion.

This is a wonderful character based film full of heart. It’s Sad, sweet, heart breaking and hopeful and some scenes and lines that will have you crying from laughter, all rolled into one. I loved the film. Adding it to my library.
